Pun Pro / Punslingers Rules

(Adapted from the O. Henry Pun-off World Championships Website)

This event only has two players and one judge per round.

  1. Contestants come to the front of the room and face each other.
  2. The judge, using their divine wisdom such as a coin toss, will select one contestant to choose a face-down topic card from a pile.
  3. Once the topic is chosen and announced, the other contestant will have five (5) beats to deliver a pun on the topic.
  4. The other contestant (the one who chose the topic) then has a five count to respond with another on the same topic.
  5. If the contestant exceeds the five-count, they receive a strike.
  6. During a round, each contestant will be allowed three strikes before being eliminated. All the discretion of the judge, strikes may also be awarded for non-puns made on qualifying words unless an appropriate “fix” is made. An unacceptable replacement for the “fix” may be considered a non-response and result in a strike.
  7. Puns may NOT be made on the same word during a round. A contestant who violates this rule will receive a “strike” and will be given another five seconds to come up with a valid pun that has not been used.
  8. Topics may be modified if needed, as determined by the judge by narrowing, defining, or broadening the scope. In addition, the judge may draw a new topic before the start of the round.
