Searching the Catalog

To see if ECC Library owns a specific title you will need to access Archway, the library’s online catalog. The catalog is a listing (an index) of all materials that ECC owns in it's collection.  This includes books, DVDs, music CDs, children's books, audiobooks, and even electronic books.  The catalog is a brief record of each item and includes

  • title
  • author
  • publication information
  • location
  • availability
  • subject (what it's about) * see below for more info
  • often times a summary or table of contents

The Archway catalog is accessible from any device with an Internet connection.

Why use subject headings? See more at http://eastcentral.libguides.com/foundationLCSH

Subject headings are the focus of the item, whether it is a book, article or even an image.  Subject heading searching is a more specific way to search and will narrow down your result lists rather than using keyword.

Subject headings are a very precise language called a “controlled vocabulary” they can be confusing at times, but there are clues within the book and article information to this language.

Look for a column labeled “Library of Congress Subject Heading” for exact terms.

Here are some examples of subject headings vs keyword terms:
