What is Science Fiction?

Science fiction, or Sci-Fi, is a term that was popularized in the 1920s for a genre of literature often dealing with futuristic and imaginative concepts and their impacts. Sci-Fi often involves futuristic advances in technology and/or science, time travel, space travel, or dystopian worlds.

Although there is debate amongst critics, Mary Shelley is often referred to as the mother of science fiction in regards to her work, Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus (1818). Others consider "true" modern sci-fi begins with H.G. Wells' The Time Machine (1895) and Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864). (Sterling, Bruce. "science fiction". www.britannica.com/art/science-fiction).

Regardless of science fiction's debatable beginnings, it's still a very popular and hugely influential genre of literature today. Many strides in diversity have been made in sci-fi literature by authors including N.K. Jemisin, Nnedi Okorafor, Octavia E. Butler, Tochi Onyebuchi, Sarah Gailey, Simon Jimenez, and Carlos Alberto Hernandez.
