ECC Library resources for Geography

Geography the study of the physical features of the earth and its atmosphere, and of human activity as it affects and is affected by these, including the distribution of populations and resources, land use, and industries (Oxford Languages).

What does this mean? Geography is both a physical science and a cultural/historical science. It has also developed into a technical science thanks to the advancement of technology and computers.

Geography is the study of the relationship between the earth's physical properties and earth's inhabitants. Throughout history, human populations have gravitated towards natural resources needed to survive and thrive. Why did history happen where it happened? Why did civilizations rise and fall where they did? Why did humans and animals migrate from one place to another? Because of geography -- the earth's physical characteristics & natural resources -- and the needs of humans and animals. Cartography is the science and art of mapmaking. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are computer systems that help capture, store, and analyze geospatial data to better understand spatial patterns and relationships. Geospatial-Intelligence (GEOINT) is the information that is derived from the analysis of geographic data and images.

Library of Congress Classification for Geography

ECC Library uses the Library of Congress (LOC) Classification System to organize our books and resources using call numbers.

The letter "G" is used for geography call numbers.

See the classification guide below for "G" call numbers related to geography.

Call number example: GE 234.5

For an even more in-depth breakdown of geography-related subclasses, use this link: LOC Geography Subclasses.
