Guides for Authoring & Editing

I want to write my own open textbook. How do I get started?

Google Docs - Google docs can be used to share an OER you have authored by changing the privacy to public/view only. This will generate a public URL link that you can use to add it to repositories.  This method is recommended as a last resort and instead use a publisher like Open Author to add materials to a repository.

Canvas/Canvas Commons -  You can share courses and materials you've created in the Canvas LMS with others. Canvas offers a licensing tool to help you openly license your course/materials.

Can I edit or change an open textbook?
Usually, yes. The vast majority of open textbooks have a Creative Commons license that allows for editing, adapting and making derivatives.
The license says it’s okay. How do I edit an open textbook?
A lot depends on the file types the author or publisher has made available. You may need technical support from local staff at your institution. See our guide, Modifying an Open Textbook, for more information.
