Group Study Room Policy

 

Purpose

The primary purpose of the group study room is to provide a place for students to engage in collaborative and cooperative study in small groups. Permanent assignment of room is not made to any particular academic group, faculty member or social organization.

Facilities

Room includes large table and seating for up to eight.  Computer, projector, white board, web cam and surge protector are installed. 

Group study rooms are not soundproof; please keep your voices down out of consideration for others. It has a shared wall with private testing rooms.

Groups that are excessively noisy and disturb others may be asked to vacate group study rooms.

Food and drink, noise, and other library policies are in effect in group study room.

Group study rooms are not available for functions such as: classes, lectures, seminars, tutor space, faculty office space or business meetings.

Reservations and Usages

Room can be reserved in 2 hour increments and up to two weeks in advance.  Walk in reservations are accepted. Please see library staff to make a reservation.

Check out the room key at your reserved time, a student ID is required.

Expo markers are also available for check out and use in group study room.

Reservation time may be extend if there are no other current bookings.

Turn off all equipment and lock room upon end of usage, return key and markers to Library Service Desk.

Displays/Bulletin Boards Policy

Purpose

The East Central Library exhibits materials which support the college’s mission, programs, and services. Displays showcase a variety of different topics, groups, and interests that would be beneficial to the ECC community. Library materials can range from informational to educational to entertainment, etc. Special interest displays/bulletin boards should promote the library’s collection, services, and programs as well.

Subjects

No subjects/topics will be off-limits, although controversial materials may be reviewed by Director, Library Services to make certain it meets the stated purpose of display and benefits the ECC community.

Subjects/topics should

  • Contribute positively to the library environment by promoting materials of the library
  • Publicize resources and services of East Central College
  • Inform ECC community of current or historical events/topics supported by the library's collection and/or services
  • Help facilitate the exchange of ideas, knowledge, or research within the ECC community at large
  • Enrich the life of the college and community its serves
  • Provide a means of strengthening ties between the Library, college and community
  • Publicize accomplishments of faculty, staff and students of the college

Audience

Displays/bulletin boards may be viewed by a variety of patrons.  Some may appeal to certain groups such as children, college students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Materials

Displays/bulletin boards may include a variety of materials, but not limited to books, DVDs, Blu-rays, CDs, puzzles, board games, posters, library approved handouts, supporting décor, etc.  A variety of display stands, boxes, fabric, shelving, white boards are also available.

Responsibility

Library staff are responsible for all displays/bulletin boards and themes.  Library materials are selected by library staff.  ECC faculty, staff, students, and community groups may collaborate with library staff in creating a display/bulletin board that fall within the guidelines of this policy.

Locations

There are 4 areas for displays and 4 bulletin boards.  An occasional “rolling table” display or DVD stand display may also be exhibited at the discretion of library staff.

Displays:

  • Library Service Desk, social media counter
  • Library Service Desk, tall counter corner
  • Library Service Desk, low counter
  • New Items shelf, pillar

Bulletin Boards:

  • Large, near Leisure/YA reading
  • Medium, near Student group study room
  • Medium pairs (2) or use individually, in student computer lab

Security

All displays/bulletin boards are open to library patrons. A sign will be displayed if use or interaction with display/bulletin board is limited. "Please do not disturb the art"  However, damage or theft is not the responsibility of the library.

Children 11/16/16

Children in Library

Purpose

All children age 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult while in ECC Library.   Exceptions may be approved in advance by an agent of the College. Refer to Board Policy 2.15 http://www.eastcentral.edu/board-policies/2-15children-on-campus-policy/

Guidelines

Behavior:

•The library maintains an environment conducive to study and research by the adult student.

•Accompanied child will maintain low voice level, use headphones on personal devices, be allowed drink and snack.  Inappropriate behaviors include loud, disruptive noises, running, playing with library equipment, eating a meal, etc.  

•Any damage caused by child is adult’s responsibility.  Torn pages, damaged keyboards, spilt drinks, etc.

•Continued inappropriate behaviors will lead to adult and child being asked to leave ECC Library.

Library Card:

              •Current ECC ID or Community Patron Library card is required to check out library materials.

  •Community Patron application is available to members living within college district, must have valid state ID, and age 18 and over.  Those age 17 may apply with parental permission.

Computer/internet use:

               •A community user card, or MOBIUS library card is required to check out login code for a computer.

               •ECC Library computers do not have internet filters.

   •An adult allowing a child to use their computer login is a violation of IT Policy.

Safety concerns

ECC campus is an open campus and this may put a child at serious risk from strangers.

Library staff cannot be responsible for child’s safety and comfort, especially in an emergency situation.

Library staff cannot keep child from leaving the premise.

Children may not be left in ECC Library so an adult may

•Attend class •Take test •Be in science lab •Be in Fitness Center •Receive tutoring

 

Responsibility

If the child is left in ECC Library without any adult supervision, the library staff member will notify appropriate personnel; supervisor, first responder, Campus Security, etc.  A student incident report may be filed with Student Services.
